DESCRIPTION :
Primarily meant to provide protection to the wife or female live-in partner from domestic violence at the hands of the husband or male live-in partner or his relatives, the law also extends its protection to women living in a household such as sisters, widows or mothers.[8]
Domestic violence under the act includes actual abuse, whether physical, sexual, verbal, emotional or economic, or the threat of abuse.[2]
This definition also includes harassment by way of unlawful dowry demands to the woman or her relatives.
கணவர் அல்லது அவருடன் இணைந்து வாழும் ஆண் துணையின் (அல்லது அவர்களின் உறவினர்களின்) தரப்பிலிருந்து ஏற்படும் குடும்ப வன்முறையிலிருந்து மனைவி அல்லது அவருடன் இணைந்து வாழும் பெண் துணையைப் பாதுகாப்பதே இச்சட்டத்தின் முதன்மையான நோக்கமாகும்;
இருப்பினும், ஒரே வீட்டில் வசிக்கும் சகோதரிகள், விதவைகள் அல்லது தாய்மார்கள் போன்ற பெண்களுக்கும் இச்சட்டம் பாதுகாப்பை வழங்குகிறது.
